Exhibition: Dewey Defeats Truman/The Housing Act of 1949

With the modern-day 24-hour news cycle, it’s hard to believe that we once relied on daily newspapers to deliver word of current events. But so it was in 1948, when one of the most infamous—and totally inaccurate—headlines of the day broke. A new exhibit at The West End Museum highlights that headline, the post-WWII national housing crisis and the onset of the federal urban renewal program.
The Show Reception will take place on September 24 from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Light refreshments will be served.

This fall, The West End Museum will host a new photography exhibit in its Members’ Gallery that celebrates the beauty and mystery of Italy. Indelebile Italia is part of the Museum’s annual commemoration of Italian Heritage Month in October.
The Show Reception will take place on October 17 at 4 pm, when attendees can tour the exhibit and enjoy light refreshments.
Film: The Pruitt-Igoe Myth

Chad Freidrichs’ documentary tells the story of the Pruitt-Igoe, an ill-famed 1954 St. Louis public-housing complex, demolished in 1972. Minoru Yamasaki, who designed the World Trade Towers, was the architect behind the project that became a symbol of failure among architects. The date of the demolition of America’s first major public housing project was even hailed as “the day that modern architecture died” by Charles Jencks, a renowned architect and critic of postmodernist architecture.
